The idea of home, what creates it and its connection to national identity are at the core of this body of work. The cultural discourse of westernised Slovak culture was the basis for my research. I focus on the period of the fall of the Communist regime in former Czechoslovakia in the late 1980s. Western culture had been idealised in the East; it was considered exotic and out of reach due to the decades of isolation. After the fall of the communist regime the West became open and accessible, but western culture could not have been understood in its complexity, so it was adopted and modified within Slovak culture. The emphasis in my practice is on the spiritual element of identity and its connection to nationality. Although my paintings are often politically motivated, they are not intended to make a political statement, rather they are lyrical comments. Some paintings are inspired by historical events that are significant to my cultural legacy, others by current events provoking strong emotions connected to identity issues triggered by cultural differences.
